Choosing a Jacket Size When Ordering Online
Jackets are the garment most often returned for size, and almost always for the same reason: the size was chosen as if the jacket would be worn over nothing. It will not be. A few minutes with a tape measure, taken over the clothes you will actually wear underneath, removes most of the guesswork.
Measure over the right layers
Put on the heaviest thing you expect to wear under the jacket, then measure your chest at its fullest point with the tape flat across your back. Do the same at the hip if the jacket is long enough to reach it. Those two numbers are what you compare against the size chart on the product page, not the size you take in a T-shirt.
Check the sleeve with your arm bent
Measure from the shoulder point over a slightly bent elbow to the wrist. A sleeve measured with the arm straight will read short, and a jacket that fits while you stand still can ride up when you reach for a rail or a steering wheel. Allow a centimetre or two beyond the straight-arm figure.
Shoulders are the one thing you cannot fix
Most of a jacket can be adjusted by a tailor. The shoulder seam cannot, at least not affordably, so it is the measurement to get right first. It should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone, not beyond it. A blazer that is right in the shoulder and slightly loose in the waist is a far better buy than the reverse.
Between two sizes
For a shell or a padded jacket meant to go over knitwear, take the larger size; insulation needs room to work and a tight jacket is a cold one. For a fitted blazer worn over a shirt or a fine knit, follow the chart closely, and if you are still between sizes, size up and have the waist taken in.
Read the fit description as an instruction
Words like relaxed, oversized, and cropped describe the cut, not the size. An oversized fleece is designed to sit loose, so buying it a size up produces something shapeless rather than something comfortable. If the description says a style runs small or large, treat that as a direct instruction and adjust.
